Homebirds earn more!

And we thought working from home was a sacrifice. Not anymore. In fact, it is far more lucrative than working in a cubicle. According to a survey by Bureau of Labour in the US, men who work from home are paid about 13 cents per hour more than men who work from the office. For women, the differential is about 9 cents.

As the regular office-goers get perturbed about the gap between the two salaries, experts from the field offer explanations. “Better works get better benefits,” is her simple answer. However, harsh it may sound to some but companies find that teleworkers (employees reporting from a telephone) give a better performance and even devote longer hours when compared to their counterparts in the plush office, which clearly reflects in their hefty paypackages. Also, these at-home employees are also away from snags like traffic when on their way to the office building.

Rita Mace Walston, executive director of Telework Consortium, USA, throws some light on the matter by saying, “HR is making sure performance reviews are based on tasks completed rather than ‘I see you, so you must be working’ approach.” She goes on to add, “After all, anything that requires creativity, problem solving, trying to keep a train of thought can be best delivered from the relative calm of a home office.” To this economist Bonnie Sue Gariety says, “The differential may not be big, but it’s a good commentary on how workis being seen these days.”

Work from home

Your next ‘at-home’ job is just a call away. Literally! The US call centre services came up with the brilliant concept of hiring homemakers as their customer care representatives. And the best part of the deal is that these homemakers don’t have to leave the precincts of their sacrosanct home. So much so that the number of 100,000 at-home agents in 2004 has risen to 4 million in 2007 in just the USA.

Take Tami Covington, a mother of two children, aged 11 and 7, for instance. She makes a living answering the phone. Of all you know, she may have booked your airplane ticket or perhaps helped you select flowers for that special someone.

But instead of working in a cubicle in a call centre, Tami is home as she solves queries and takes orders. Such a work life allows her to work while her kids are in school or at night. Believe it or not, but she is able to pull off a cool 35 hours every week for work.

Having worked full time at a call centre earlier, Tami finds her current work status “relaxing”. In her own words, “Call centres have a lot of background noise, but it’s quiet at home. So, it’s easier to concentrate.” Agreeing with her Antoinette Quaye who previously used to commute by bus to her consumer service job at a retail store. But since April, she has been answering the phone for flower agency only by staying at home and is “loving it”.

Considering the $17 billion industry that India shall achieve in the customer care sector by 2008 (according to the NASSCOM McKinsey Report), wonder when will they offer the same delectable job to the many young, educated homemakers in the country who are itching to work?
